Best Cordless Planer
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
The best cordless planer depends on the battery you already own and the cut depth you need. This page compares eleven cordless hand planers from brand-name listings, using only the figures each Amazon listing gives. Ten of the eleven are sold as tool only, or without a battery and charger. The one that is not, the Bosch GHO18V-26N, does not state battery or charger status in the text we read. We do not rank the planers.
Quick answer
- Battery platform splits six ways: six planers run on 18V, three on 20V (DEWALT 20V MAX, Craftsman V20 and SKIL 20V), and two on 12V (Bosch 12V Max and Milwaukee M12). Match the platform to a pack you already own before you compare anything else.
- Speed figures are stated for six planers, and the Makita XPK02Z gives two numbers that disagree: 12,000 RPM in a bullet and 15,000 RPM in its description.
- Depth figures measure different things. DEWALT and Craftsman state a maximum depth of cut of 5/64 in, Makita XPK01Z states 5/64 in deep per single pass, and Bosch GHO18V-26N states 3/32 in per pass.
- Weight ranges from 3.3 pounds for the Bosch GHO12V-08N, tool only, to 7.4 pounds for the Makita XPK01Z.

Platform count and average weight
Counting by the battery platform each listing states, the eleven planers split into six on 18V (Makita XPK01Z, Makita XPK02Z, Makita DKP181Z, Bosch PLH181B, Bosch GHO18V-26N and Ryobi P611), three on 20V (DEWALT, Craftsman and SKIL) and two on 12V (Bosch GHO12V-08N and Milwaukee 2524-20). Six listings state a weight. Converting the Makita DKP181Z figure from 2.9 kg at 2.20462 pounds per kilogram gives about 6.39 pounds. The average of the six is (6.8 + 7.4 + 6.39 + 3.3 + 5.6 + 4.4) divided by 6, which comes to 5.65 pounds, rounded to two decimals. That average covers only the six listings that state a weight, so it is a summary of listing figures and not a measure of how the planers perform.

How we chose
We searched Amazon for cordless planer on 2026-10-22 and kept the brand-named cordless planer listings in the results. Eleven listings met that criterion, and all eleven were checked on 2026-10-22. We left out corded planers, listings whose titles say they are compatible with another maker’s battery even when a seller name appears in the title, and a second Makita 18V LXT listing with a similar model number. The eleven are not ranked. For each one we copied only what its listing states, and we marked a spec not stated when the listing was silent.
What we could not verify
The sources we opened do not confirm how any stated speed or depth figure performs in use, because the listings give figures and nothing about cutting results. They do not say which planer suits which species of wood or which board width. Battery and charger status is not stated for the Bosch GHO18V-26N, and the Bosch PLH181B text we read does not give it either. The Makita XPK02Z listing gives two motor speeds that disagree, and the sources we opened do not say which one is right.
What the sources do not say
The listings do not compare planer types with each other, and they do not say how depth figures should be read against one another. Two listings give a runtime-type figure: the Bosch GHO12V-08N gives a runtime per amp hour in hardwood at a stated depth, and the Craftsman gives up to 30 passes per charge. The other listings give none, and the two figures use different conditions, so they do not compare directly. None of the sources we opened is a manufacturer page for these planers.
Before you buy
- Match the battery platform to a pack you already own, and confirm it in the listing.
- Read the battery and charger line before you add a pack and charger to your plan.
- Compare depth figures only where the listings use the same wording, since the groups above measure different things.
- If weight matters to you, use the stated figure, and note that five of the eleven listings give none.
FAQ
Is a cordless planer as capable as a corded planer?
The Makita XPK01Z listing says its cordless planer combines the speed and capacity of a corded planer with the convenience of cordless. That is the listing’s own claim. The sources we opened do not compare cordless and corded planers directly, so we do not confirm it.
Which depth figure should I compare?
The figures measure different things. DEWALT and Craftsman give a maximum depth of cut of 5/64 in, Makita XPK01Z gives 5/64 in deep in a single pass, Bosch GHO18V-26N gives 3/32 in per pass, and Bosch PLH181B gives a knob range from 0 to 1/16 in. Compare figures only where the listings use the same wording, and treat the rest as separate.
Do I need to buy a battery with one of these planers?
Most of them do not include one. Ten of the eleven listings are tool only, or say the battery and charger are not included or sold separately. The Bosch GHO18V-26N does not say. Check the title and the included details before you buy. If you are looking at other DeWalt 20V MAX tools, see our guide to the best DeWalt 20V Max brushless handheld blower.
Can I use a battery from another brand in these planers?
Do not assume it. No listing in this group names another brand’s battery as a match. Each one names its own platform, such as 18V LXT, 20V MAX, V20, 12V Max or M12. If you are choosing a battery for a DeWalt leaf blower, see our guide to the best battery for a DeWalt leaf blower.
Which planers name a dust feature?
The Craftsman listing names a dust bag, a large dust port diameter and a dual chip exhaust port. The Ryobi listing names a dust bag in its title. The SKIL listing names dual chip exhaust, the Bosch GHO18V-26N names dual shaving exhaust ports, and the Bosch PLH181B names a chip-ejection switch. The Makita XPK02Z names an optional wireless dust extractor link. The DEWALT, Makita XPK01Z, Bosch GHO12V-08N and Milwaukee listings name no dust feature in the text we read.
Which planer is the lightest?
Among the listings that state a weight, the Bosch GHO12V-08N is the lightest at 3.3 pounds, tool only without its battery. The Milwaukee 2524-20 is 4.4 pounds, the Ryobi 5.6 pounds, the Makita DKP181Z about 6.4 pounds converted, the DEWALT 6.8 pounds and the Makita XPK01Z 7.4 pounds.
Bottom line
Pick the planer whose battery platform matches a pack you already own. If its listing says the battery and charger are sold separately, add them to your plan before you compare anything else.
