If you are working out how to store a robot lawn mower for winter, the manufacturer answer is indoor storage. Husqvarna advises keeping the mower, the charging station and the power supply indoors, in a dry place above freezing. The guide allows two exceptions: the NERA baseplate can stay outside, and a charging station that must stay outside has to stay connected and protected.
This post covers the mower, the charging station, the power supply, the wires and the reference station. It does not repeat the battery charging steps or the blade replacement steps that the Husqvarna winter guide also lists.
Quick answer
- Store the mower and the charging station indoors in a dry place above freezing. The NERA baseplate is the one part the guide says can stay outside.
- Unplug the power supply and store it in a dry, frost-free place.
- The boundary wire and guide wire can remain in the ground. Label each wire so it is easy to reconnect in spring.
- If the charging station must stay outside, keep it connected to mains power, the boundary wire and the guide wires, and protect it from the weather.
Safety before you store
The safety point in the winter guides is the power supply. The Husqvarna winter guide says to disconnect it and store it in a dry, frost-free location. The Husqvarna support page says to unplug the power supply and store it in a dry and frost-free place.
Steps for winter storage
- Set GeoFence, if your model has it. The Husqvarna US winter guide says to “Keep GeoFence active” when the mower is stored inside the GeoFence area. If you move the mower outside that area, the guide says to “Disable GeoFence before powering off.”
- Clean the body and the charging station. The Husqvarna support page lists cleaning the mower and the station as part of winter preparation, and it says to “perform thorough cleaning of the body, chassis” before storage. Do the cleaning before you bring the mower indoors.
- Check the charging contacts. The Husqvarna winter guide says to “Check the charging contacts on both the mower and charging station for corrosion or debris.” If you find damage or wear, the same guide says to “contact your dealer for spare parts or assistance.”
- Inspect the mower’s moving parts and wheels. The Husqvarna support page says to carry out a general inspection of wear parts. It advises you to “Rotate the wheels and listen for any squeaking,” and to “Contact your dealer for spare parts and assistance” if something is worn.
- Decide where the charging station goes. Indoors is the default. The Husqvarna FAQ says that if you cannot store the station indoors, it “must be connected to the mains, boundary wire and guide wires for the entire winter.” The winter guide also says to “Ensure adequate weather protection.” For a wider look at charging setups, see charging systems for lawn mowers.
- Disconnect and store the power supply. The winter guide says “Disconnect and store in a dry, frost-free location.”
- Label and organize the wires. The winter guide says to use an Automower connector box “to organise and protect wire connectors,” and to “Label each wire for easy reconnection in spring.” The support page says the same about tagging the wires.
- Position the mower. The winter guide says to “Rest mower on all wheels on a flat surface,” or to use a wall hanger “designed for secure storage.” The support page says to keep the mower on all of its wheels and on level ground during storage. It describes the wall hanger as made for storing the mower and the station, and says it “is available as an accessory.”
- Handle the reference station separately. The EPOS reference station, used for wire-free installs, is described as “weatherproof and designed for year-round outdoor use.” The winter guide says it can be stored in temperatures from -20 to 70 degrees Celsius. If you move it, the EPOS page says the map must be re-created. If the station goes back into its original position after indoor storage, the winter guide says the mounting arm allows “easy reinstallation” and that the station “Preserves existing virtual boundaries and work areas.” For a wire-free model in general, see robot mowers that run without a perimeter wire.
Indoor or outdoor: the storage table
The table sets out each item, the recommended indoor storage, and what the guides say if the item must stay outside. Where a page is silent, the cell says “not stated.”

Why the sources differ on the charging station
The STIHL iMOW FAQ page says you should not leave the robot mower in its docking station during the coldest part of the year, and that you should store it somewhere dry, such as a garage. The Husqvarna pages allow the charging station outside in some cases, as long as it stays connected and protected. The two approaches are not the same. The sources do not give a temperature for the coldest part of the year, so the choice depends on whether you can bring the station indoors. For the general trade-offs of robot mowers, see the pros and cons of robotic lawn mowers.
If you do not have indoor space
The Husqvarna winter guide suggests a dealer option. It says to “Save garage space by using your dealer’s winter storage services,” and to “Ask about availability when booking your annual service.” If you hold a Husqvarna Warranty Plus, Service Plus or Lease Plus contract, the guide says to “contact your local dealer for included winter maintenance and storage services.” It also says to “Check your contract terms” to see which services are covered, and that “The services included may vary by country and between dealers.”
How we chose
We searched for manufacturer winter guidance and opened five pages on 2026-10-22: the Husqvarna US winter guide, the Husqvarna US support page, the Husqvarna US FAQ, the Husqvarna EPOS page, and the STIHL iMOW FAQ page. Husqvarna pages carry most of the steps, because they cover the mower, the station, the wires and the reference station. The STIHL page is used for its one contrasting point about the coldest part of the year. We quoted only sentences found in the saved text. This post does not rank products.
What we could not verify
- The temperature at which the charging station must come indoors. The Husqvarna pages give a storage range for the reference station only.
- Whether your model follows these steps exactly. The Husqvarna winter guide says to “Check your operator’s manual for specific requirements” when models differ.
- What the STIHL phrase “the coldest part of the year” means in days or degrees.
- Which models accept the wall hanger. The Husqvarna pages name the accessory but do not list the models that take it.
What the sources do not say
- Battery charge and storage steps. The Husqvarna winter guide includes them, but they are not repeated in this post.
- Blade and screw replacement, and the general wear check. The guide lists them, and this post does not give those steps.
- How the STIHL docking station is stored in winter. The captured STIHL summary does not give the steps.
- An upper storage temperature for the mower. The Husqvarna winter guide poses the question of the temperature range for use and storage, but the captured text gives no answer for the mower.
- Whether dealer winter storage is offered where you live. The guide says to ask about availability when you book the annual service.
FAQ
Should a robot lawn mower be stored outside over winter?
The Husqvarna US winter guide says it strongly advises indoor storage for the mower, the charging station and the power supply. The exception is the NERA baseplate, which is designed to remain outdoors. The Husqvarna FAQ says the same thing in shorter form: store the mower, the station and the power supply indoors in winter.
Can the charging station stay outside for the winter?
Only in the cases the Husqvarna guides describe. The NERA baseplate can stay outside. For a station that cannot be stored indoors, the guide says to keep it connected to mains power, the boundary wire and the guide wires, and to ensure adequate weather protection. STIHL advises against leaving its docking station in place during the coldest part of the year.
Do I need to unplug the power supply for winter?
Yes. The Husqvarna winter guide says to disconnect the power supply and store it in a dry, frost-free location. The Husqvarna support page says to unplug it and store it in a dry and frost-free place.
Do I need to take the boundary wire out of the ground?
No. The Husqvarna winter guide says the boundary and guide wires can remain installed in the ground throughout winter. Label each wire and store the connectors in a connector box so the wires are easy to reconnect in spring.
Does the reference station need to come inside?
No. The EPOS reference station is weatherproof and designed for year-round outdoor use. If you move it, the EPOS page says the map will need to be re-created. The winter guide gives a storage range of -20 to 70 degrees Celsius for the station.
How should the mower sit in storage?
The winter guide says to rest the mower on all of its wheels on a flat surface, or to use a wall hanger designed for secure storage. The support page says the same about keeping the mower on level ground during storage.
Bottom line
Bring the mower, the charging station and the power supply indoors to a dry place above freezing, and label the wires before you store them. If the charging station must stay outside, keep it connected and protected, and do not move a reference station without planning to re-create the map.
