How to Clean a Robot Lawn Mower

If you need to know how to clean a robot lawn mower, the manufacturer steps are short. Turn the mower off, wear gloves, and wipe the body with a damp cloth, adding a mild soap solution if needed. Disconnect the charging station’s power supply before you clean the station. Do not use a high-pressure washer on either part, and do not use solvents on the station.
This guide follows the Husqvarna US cleaning steps and adds the cleaning intervals that the STIHL and Husqvarna pages give. It leaves out the steps that work under the deck, because the pages we opened do not give a battery-removal step for that work.
Quick answer
- Turn the mower off and put on protective gloves before you clean it.
- Wipe the body with a damp cloth and, if needed, a mild soap solution. Keep the camera lens clean on models that have one.
- Disconnect the charging station’s power supply, then clean the station surface and inspect its contact plates.
- Never use a high-pressure washer on either part, and never use solvents on the station. Running water is listed for some models only.
Safety before you clean
The Husqvarna US guide gives the safety steps for cleaning. Each one is repeated in the steps below where it applies.
- Turn the mower off, then put on protective gloves, before any cleaning.
- Disconnect the power supply unit before you touch the charging station.
- Do not use a high-pressure washer on the mower or the station, and do not use solvents on the station.
The Husqvarna FAQ also says that the blades shut off as soon as the mower is lifted. The cleaning steps still start with turning the mower off.
Cleaning the mower body
- Turn off the mower. The Husqvarna US guide begins with “Turn off the robotic lawn mower,” and then says to put on protective gloves before you handle the body.
- Wipe the body and panels. Use a damp cloth. If the dirt will not come off, add a mild soap solution. The guide says to use “a damp cloth and, if necessary, a mild soap solution” on the chassis, body and panels.
- Clean the camera lens, if the model has one. The guide applies a lens step to models with AI vision technology: keep the camera lens clean to ensure optimal operation. Check your manual to see whether your model has the camera.
- Stop before the under-deck work. The guide also covers the skid plate, the wheels and the blades, and it asks you to turn the mower over for some of those steps. This post does not reproduce those steps, so use your model’s manual for them.
The guide also describes a Husqvarna cleaning and maintenance kit. It lists one fine grade emery cloth, one microfibre cloth, two brushes and one sponge, together with a bottle of Husqvarna Active Clean Spray. The spray is described as phosphate-free and biodegradable. The guide does not say the kit is required, and this post does not treat the spray as a requirement.
The guide says the body of some Automower models can be removed for easy cleaning, and it lists those models. Separate removal guides cover each one. This post does not give the removal steps, because those guides were not opened for this post.
Cleaning the charging station
- Disconnect the power supply unit first. The guide says “Disconnect the power supply unit.” Do this before any other step on the station.
- Clear the docking area. Remove grass, leaves, twigs and other objects that may impede docking. A clear docking area is part of the same guide’s advice.
- Wipe the station surface. Use a damp cloth and, if necessary, a mild soap solution to clean the surface of the charging station.
- Inspect and clean the contact plates. Inspect the contact plates and clean them using a fine grade emery cloth if necessary. The guide does not name another abrasive, so use only the fine grade it names.
Running water is a separate case. The guide says that some models can be washed with running water, “for example using a garden hose,” and it lists the models by name. For the charging station, the guide says that if you have a NERA or an EPOS model, you can use running water to clean the station. If your model is not on the list, the guide does not say that a hose rinse is safe.
Charging contacts on the mower
The guide also says to inspect the charging plates on the mower and clean them with a fine grade emery cloth if necessary. It places that step after the turn-over steps, so this post does not give the mower’s charging plate steps. Check your model’s manual for where the plates sit. If the mower will not charge after the contacts are clean, see a lawn mower battery that will not charge.
What to avoid
The guide’s warnings are short and direct. Each one is a limit on what you can use.
- Never use a high-pressure washer to clean the robotic lawn mower or the charging station.
- Never use a high-pressure washer or solvents to clean the charging station.
- Use running water only on models the guide lists. The guide’s running-water list names NERA, Aspire, commercial and some other models, so check the list before you rinse.
The guide does not say how much water pressure is safe on the models that allow running water. It only says to avoid high-pressure washers.
How often to clean
The STIHL FAQ page says that regular cleaning is important maintenance that helps keep the robotic mower fully functional. It recommends weekly cleaning and a visual inspection. The Husqvarna US guide says to clean the mower and the station “regularly” and recommends a thorough, professional cleaning at your dealer after each season. The Husqvarna pages do not give a weekly figure.
The Husqvarna FAQ links cleaning to performance on slopes. It says that a mower with large amounts of grass buildup will not perform as effectively on slopes, and it recommends cleaning the mower with a brush. For mowing in wet grass, see electric lawn mowers used on wet grass. For the general trade-offs of robot mowers, see the pros and cons of robotic lawn mowers.
Cleaning steps at a glance
The table lists each task, the wording of the source, and any limit that applies. Where a page is silent, the cell says “not stated.”

How we chose
We searched for manufacturer support pages on cleaning and opened four of them on 2026-10-22: two Husqvarna US support pages, the Husqvarna US FAQ, and the STIHL iMOW FAQ page. The steps come mainly from the Husqvarna US cleaning guide, because it is the most complete page on the topic. The STIHL page is used for the cleaning interval only. We quoted sentences that appear in the saved text of each page. This post does not rank products and does not recommend a cleaner.
What we could not verify
- Where the charging plates sit on your model, and how to reach them safely. The guide places that step after the turn-over steps, which this post does not give.
- Whether your model can be rinsed with running water. The guide names the models, and the pages we opened do not say that other models can be rinsed.
- A cleaning interval for Husqvarna mowers in numbers. The Husqvarna pages say “regularly” and recommend a professional cleaning after each season.
- Whether the STIHL interval applies to other brands. The page gives it for iMOW robotic mowers only.
What the sources do not say
- How to clean the skid plate, the wheels and the blades. The Husqvarna guide covers them with the mower turned over. The Automower pages we opened do not include a battery-removal step for that work, so this post does not give those steps.
- Which cleaners other than the warned-against solvents are safe for the body. The guide describes a Husqvarna cleaning kit, but it does not compare other cleaners.
- How much water pressure the running-water models can take. The guide says only to avoid high-pressure washers.
FAQ
How often should I clean a robot lawn mower?
The STIHL iMOW FAQ page recommends weekly cleaning and a visual inspection. The Husqvarna US guide says to clean the mower and the station regularly, and to have a professional clean it after each season. The Husqvarna pages do not give a number of weeks.
Can I rinse my robot mower with a garden hose?
Only if your model is on the running-water list in the Husqvarna US guide. The guide says that some models can be washed with running water, for example using a garden hose. For any model, the guide says never to use a high-pressure washer on the mower or the station.
Do I need to disconnect the charging station before I clean it?
Yes. The Husqvarna US guide says to disconnect the power supply unit before you clean the station. Do this first, then remove debris and wipe the surface.
What should I use on the charging contacts?
The guide says to inspect the contact plates and clean them with a fine grade emery cloth if necessary. It names that cloth, and it does not name another material for the contacts. Use only the fine grade it names.
Why does the camera lens need cleaning?
The Husqvarna US guide says to keep the camera lens clean to ensure optimal operation, and it applies that step to models with AI vision technology. If your model has a camera, include the lens in every cleaning.
Does grass buildup affect how the mower handles slopes?
The Husqvarna FAQ says a mower with large amounts of grass buildup will not perform as effectively on slopes. It recommends cleaning the mower with a brush. The FAQ does not give a slope figure in this answer.
Bottom line
Turn the mower off, clean the body and any camera lens with a damp cloth, and disconnect the charging station before you clean it. If your model is not on the running-water list, use a cloth, not a hose, because the guide does not say a rinse is safe for it.
