How to Start a Battery-Powered Lawn Mower

If you want to know how to start battery powered lawn mower models, the steps depend on the brand and the model, but the support pages we opened follow one pattern. The battery needs to be charged and in place, a safety key or lock-out control has to be engaged, and a handle is pushed or pulled toward the mower handle. Husqvarna, Black+Decker and Worx each give a different order, so this guide sets those sequences side by side and lists the checks to make when the mower will not start. If you have not chosen a battery mower yet, the pros and cons of battery-powered lawn mowers post is a better starting point.
Quick answer
- Charge the battery, put it in place, and engage the safety key or lock-out control before you squeeze or push any handle.
- The order differs by model. On the Worx WG752, press and hold the lock-out button and pull back the operating bail. On Black+Decker key-and-bail models, pull the bail to the mower handle before you engage the start lever.
- If the mower will not start, check that the battery is seated, that the key is in, and that a hot battery has cooled.
- Take the battery out before any blade work, and do not start the mower while you stand on uncut grass in the lowest position.
Safety before you start the motor
The start controls on these mowers are safety controls. Husqvarna’s start page says to “Stay behind the product” and warns: “Do not start lawn mower standing on uncut grass in the lowest position.” In practice, that means you start the mower from behind the handle, and not while you stand on uncut grass with the deck in its lowest setting.
Keep the battery out for any blade work. Husqvarna’s cleaning guide says: “WARNING: To prevent accidental starts, turn the safety key to 0, remove the battery and wait a minimum of 5 seconds.” Worx gives a similar blade check for its WG761 model: release the operating bail to turn the mower off, then “Remove the batteries, turn mower over and check that blade is free to turn.” Check the blade only after the battery is out.
Keep water away from the battery. Husqvarna says: “CAUTION: Do not use water to clean the battery lawn mowers.” The reason it gives is that “Water can enter the battery or the motor and cause a short-circuit or damage the product.”
The controls you will see
The pages name a small set of controls, and the names differ a little by brand. Knowing what each one does makes the sequence easier to follow.
- Safety key. On Husqvarna, you “Turn the safety key to 1.” On Black+Decker, the key has to go in before the mower will start. On the Worx WG743, “Ensure the SAFETY KEY (1) has been properly installed.”
- Lock-out button. On the Worx WG752, the page names the “Safety Lock-Out Button,” which you “press and hold” before the bail moves. On the Worx WG753, the page says “Push the SAFETY LOCK-OUT BUTTON (14) and then pull on the OPERATING BAIL (2).”
- Bail. On Black+Decker, the bail is pulled “back to the mower handle” before the start lever. On Worx, the “Operating Bail Handle (2)” is pulled back. On the Worx WG743 the page describes the same handle as the one you squeeze, and says the key must be held in place “BEFORE squeezing the BAIL HANDLE.”
- Start lever. On Black+Decker, the start lever is engaged after the bail. Its wording is “engage the start lever,” so it comes last in that sequence.
- Motor brake handle and start inhibitor. On Husqvarna, you “Loosen the start inhibitor” and then “Push the motor brake handle in the direction of the handlebar.”
Step-by-step start sequence
The steps below follow the common pattern across the support pages. Your model’s order governs, so compare the steps with the table in the next section before you press anything.
- Charge the battery and put it in place. Husqvarna’s start page says to open the battery lid and “Put a charged battery in the battery holder.” The Worx WG752 page says to “Ensure the batteries are fully charged.” For a battery connection problem, Husqvarna’s fix is to “Remove and reinsert the battery securely.”
- Put the safety key in. Husqvarna says to “Turn the safety key to 1.” On the Worx WG743, “Ensure the SAFETY KEY (1) has been properly installed.” Black+Decker says that “After charging the mower, you must place the safety key in the mower before it will start.”
- Stand behind the mower. Husqvarna says “Stay behind the product.” On the Worx WG743, “While standing behind the mower, the SAFETY KEY arrow should be right-facing,” so check the key orientation before you squeeze the handle.
- Release the start inhibitor, if your model has one. Husqvarna says to “Loosen the start inhibitor.” The Black+Decker and Worx pages we opened do not mention an inhibitor, so check your manual before you look for one.
- Engage the handle in your model’s order. Husqvarna says to “Push the motor brake handle in the direction of the handlebar.” Black+Decker says to “pull the bail handle back to the mower handle before engaging the start lever.” On the Worx WG752, “press and hold the Safety Lock-Out Button (1). While still holding the button, pull back the Operating Bail Handle (2).” Keep the key engaged and the battery seated before you squeeze.
- Release the lock-out once the mower runs. On the Worx WG752, “Once the mower starts, you can let go of the Safety Lock-Out Button.” The Worx WG761 page says to release the operating bail to turn the mower off, so do the same when you stop.
Start-up order by brand and model
The table lists each page’s order as written, along with the battery step where the page gives one. “Not stated” means the page does not cover that step.
| Model or page | Order the page gives | Battery step | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Husqvarna battery mower | Safety key to 1; stand behind the mower; loosen the start inhibitor; push the motor brake handle toward the handlebar | Put a charged battery in the battery holder | Husqvarna US, Lawn mower won’t start |
| Black+Decker key-and-bail model | Safety key in the mower; bail pulled back to the mower handle; start lever engaged | Not stated; the page starts after charging | Black+Decker, Why is my mower not running after I have charged it? |
| Black+Decker newer cordless model | Key inserted in the mower; hold the orange button on the side of the switch housing while pulling back the lever | Not stated | Black+Decker, What could be the problem if a new cordless mower will not start/run after being fully charged? |
| Worx WG752, 40V push mower | Press and hold the Safety Lock-Out Button; pull back the Operating Bail Handle; release the lock-out once it starts | Ensure the batteries are fully charged | Worx, Machine does not start (WG752) |
| Worx WG743, safety key model | Safety key installed and held in place before the bail handle is squeezed | Not stated | Worx, Mower doesn’t run when bail handle is activated (WG743) |
| Worx WG753, self-propelled | Push the safety lock-out button, then pull the operating bail; pull the speed lever after the bail if you use self-propel | Not stated | Worx, Machine does not start (WG753) |
The differences matter. Black+Decker says that “It is important that the bail and start lever are returned to the” off position before you insert the safety key again. The Worx pages in this set show the lock-out first on some models and the key first on others, so one rule does not fit all of them.
When the mower will not start
Work through these checks in order. Most of them come from the Husqvarna troubleshooting page, which says that “A common cause for the lawn mower not starting is that the product is not started correctly.”
- Check the battery seating and connector. Husqvarna says to “Remove and reinsert the battery securely” and to “Inspect the battery connector for dirt and misalignment.” For a battery that will not charge at all, see a lawn mower battery that will not charge.
- Let a hot battery or motor cool. The Husqvarna page notes that “Excessive heat can trigger a safety shutdown.” Its fix is to “Allow both the lawn mower and the battery to cool down completely before restarting.”
- Reset the brake handle. “Sometimes the lawn mower won’t start if the motor brake handle is engaged too soon.” Husqvarna’s fix is to “Release the motor brake handle,” then “Wait 5 seconds,” then “Press it down again and try to start the lawn mower.”
- Reinsert the key on Black+Decker models. The Black+Decker page says that “If your mower still does not start, remove the safety key and ensure the bail and start lever are in the” off position. It then says to “firmly re-insert the safety key, pull the bail handle to the mower handle and engage the start lever.”
- Confirm the key is in on newer models. The newer Black+Decker article says to “Make sure the key is inserted in the mower.” If the mower still does not start, that article points to a service center.
The Husqvarna error-light page says that “The number of LED flashes may vary depending on your lawn mower’s model.” The same page says to “Check the operator’s manual for model-specific flash codes.” If the battery light flashes as well, the page sends you to “the battery status chart in your operator’s manual.” Use the manual for your model rather than a general code list.
What we could not verify
The exact order for your model. The owner’s manuals we found are PDF files, which the fetch method cannot open, so the orders in this guide come from brand help pages and may not match your model. A Ryobi support page returned an error when we opened it, so Ryobi models are not covered here. We did not open start pages for DeWalt or Greenworks mowers, so this guide does not cover them.
Whether a particular battery fits a particular mower. The sources do not say, and this guide does not assume a cross-brand fit.
How we chose
We looked for battery mower pages on manufacturer help sites, because brand support pages are where the start steps are written out in plain text. We opened nine pages on 2026-10-22 from Husqvarna US, Black+Decker and Worx, and cite all nine. We did not rank them and did not pick a best brand. Two other pages were opened but are not cited: a Husqvarna page for a gas push mower, which covers fuel engines, and a Ryobi help page with no start steps.
What the sources do not say
The sources we opened do not give a battery voltage, amp-hour rating or runtime for any start routine. For those figures, see the battery voltage and amp-hour figures for lawn mowers post. The pages also do not say how long a battery should charge before the first start, and they do not say whether one brand’s battery works in another brand’s mower.
FAQ
How do you start a battery-powered lawn mower?
Charge the battery and put it in place, insert the safety key, stand behind the mower, and then engage the handle in the order your model needs. Husqvarna’s sequence ends with “Push the motor brake handle in the direction of the handlebar.” Worx’s WG752 presses the lock-out button first and then pulls back the operating bail. Confirm the order in your owner’s manual before you start.
Why does the key matter if the battery is charged?
Black+Decker says that after charging, “you must place the safety key in the mower before it will start.” A charged battery does not replace the key. On the Worx WG743, “The SAFETY KEY must be engaged and held in place BEFORE squeezing the BAIL HANDLE.” Black+Decker’s wording is direct: the mower will not start until the key is in the mower, whatever the charge.
Does the bail or the lock-out button go first?
It depends on the model. On the Worx WG752 and WG753, the lock-out button is pushed first, and then the operating bail is pulled. On the Worx WG743, the key has to be engaged and held before the bail is squeezed. On Black+Decker key-and-bail models, the bail is drawn back to the mower handle before the start lever is engaged. Check which pattern your model follows.
What should I do if the battery or motor is too hot to start?
Husqvarna’s page says that “Excessive heat can trigger a safety shutdown.” Remove the battery and allow both the lawn mower and the battery to cool down completely before you restart. Do not try to start the mower again until both have cooled completely.
Can I wash a battery mower with water?
No. Husqvarna says “CAUTION: Do not use water to clean the battery lawn mowers.” It adds that “Water can enter the battery or the motor and cause a short-circuit or damage the product.” Clean the deck and housing without water, and keep the battery out during any cleaning work.
Bottom line
Use the start order in your own model’s manual, and when the mower will not start, check the battery seating and the safety key before anything else.
