How to Set the Cutting Height on a Mower

If you want to know how to set cutting height on lawn mower models, the answer depends on the type of mower. The pages we opened describe a lever on push mowers, a lift lever with slots on riding mowers, and a knob or app slider on some robot mowers. The pages we opened tell you not to change the height while the mower is running, and some tell you to remove the battery first.
This guide explains the mechanism for each type, using manufacturer and extension pages. It also shows where Husqvarna’s pages disagree about which way a lever moves. Grass height for the lawn is a separate question and is not covered here.
Quick answer
- Stop the mower first. Husqvarna’s pages say not to change the height while the engine is running, and for a battery mower that cuts out under load, they say to stop it and remove the battery before raising the cut.
- Find your adjuster. Push mowers use a lever, riding mowers use a lift lever in a slot, and some robot mowers use a knob under a hatch or a slider in an app.
- Check the lever direction in your manual. Husqvarna’s petrol page and its battery overload page describe opposite directions.
- Some pages give height ranges for specific models. This post does not repeat them.
Safety: stop the mower before you touch the adjuster
Start with the engine or motor off. Husqvarna’s petrol “hard to push” page says never to attempt wheel height adjustments while the engine is running. Its battery push-mower page says never to attempt to set the cutting height while the product is running.
Battery mowers need one more step. Husqvarna’s battery troubleshooting page covers a motor that slows or stops because it is working too hard, and one of its causes is a low cutting height. Its fix is to stop the mower and remove the battery, then raise the cut with the adjustment lever. University of Illinois Extension gives the general rule for electric mowers: whenever your hand goes near the blades, remove the battery.
Robot mowers start the same way. Husqvarna’s knob instructions begin by pressing the STOP button and opening the hatch.
Do not set the height too low. The Husqvarna petrol page warns that the blades can hit the ground if the lawn surface is not level, and its battery pages repeat that caution. Keep the height high enough to clear uneven ground.
Push mowers with a lever
Lever designs differ between brands and between models. Husqvarna’s battery push-mower page says to move the cutting height lever to increase or decrease the cutting height, and that depending on the model of your lawn mower, the lever design can vary. It does not give a direction for its lever, so the model’s manual is the reference.
On an 18V Ryobi push mower in the Australian support article for model OLM1833S, you pull the height adjustment lever toward the wheel, then raise or lower the deck to the height you want. The handle must sit in one of the five height slots. On a 36V Ryobi model, the article for R36LMW16 says to slide the adjusting lever forward to unlock it, then raise the cut or push the mower down to lower it, and release the lever to lock it in place.
Worx’s North American support page for its self-propelled WG753 model says to push up the cutting height adjustment lever and then adjust the height. That page is about a mulching symptom, and it is cited only for the lever action.
Models with a different lever are covered in the table below. Corded self-propelled models are covered in the self-propelled corded electric lawn mower guide.
The lever direction conflict
Husqvarna’s two pages do not agree on which way the lever moves the cut. On the petrol-mower page, you move the cutting height lever rearward to decrease the height and forward to increase it. On the battery-mower overload page, you move the lever backwards to increase the height and forwards to decrease it.
The petrol page says its steps apply to standard lawn mowers and that the height can be adjusted in several levels. The petrol page is for a gas mower, and the battery page is for a battery mower. The sources do not explain the difference, so the direction depends on the model you own. Look for the arrows or labels on your mower and confirm them against your manual before you move the lever.
Robot mowers with a knob or an app
Husqvarna’s US support page for the Automower 308V, 312V and Aspire R6V says the cutting height can be adjusted manually from the mower. You press the STOP button, open the hatch, and turn the height adjustment knob to the position you want. On that page, turning the knob clockwise increases the cutting height and turning it anti-clockwise decreases it.
Husqvarna’s general robot-mower page says the height can be adjusted electronically or manually, depending on the model and the technology it uses. Models with electric adjustment use a slider. In the app, you choose the cutting height setting and move the slider to the height you want, then save. On the mower’s display, the path is Menu, then Cutting height, then the setting you want. The page notes that the cutting height symbol may vary across models, so look for the matching symbol on your display.

Riding mowers with a lift lever
On a Husqvarna riding mower, the position of the attachment lift lever sets the cutting height. You place the lever in the slot for the height you want. The page also says the heights are measured from the ground to the blade tip with the engine not running. The page lists a range in inches and millimeters. This post does not repeat those figures.
Handle height is a separate adjustment
Husqvarna’s battery push-mower page covers a different adjustment in the same section: the handle. It says your mower is easier to push if the handle height is set to a level that works for you. The page treats the handle as a comfort adjustment for pushing, so do not assume it changes the cut. The sources we opened do not say whether the handle height affects the cut.
What each mower type says
The table below sets out each adjuster, the direction the source gives and the safety step it names. A cell that says not stated means the cited page does not give that detail.
| Mower type and page | Adjuster | Direction the page gives | Stop first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol push mower (Husqvarna petrol page) | Cutting height lever | Rearward lowers; forward raises | Not stated on this page; the “hard to push” page says no wheel height changes with the engine running |
| Battery push mower, overload fix (Husqvarna battery page) | Cutting height lever | Backwards raises; forwards lowers | Stop and remove the battery |
| Battery push mower (Husqvarna battery page) | Cutting height lever | Not stated; design varies by model | Never adjust while the product is running |
| 18V Ryobi push mower OLM1833S (Ryobi Australia) | Height lever pulled toward the wheel | Raise or lower the deck; direction not stated | Not stated |
| 36V Ryobi model R36LMW16 (Ryobi Australia) | Adjusting lever slid forward to unlock | Raise, or push the mower down to lower | Not stated |
| Self-propelled Worx WG753 (Worx North America) | Cutting height adjustment lever | Push up the lever, then adjust | Not stated |
| Automower 308V, 312V, Aspire R6V (Husqvarna robot page) | Knob under the hatch | Clockwise raises; anti-clockwise lowers | Press STOP and open the hatch |
| Automower with electric adjustment (Husqvarna robot page) | App slider or display menu | Slider position | Not stated |
| Riding mower (Husqvarna riding page) | Attachment lift lever in a slot | Lever position in a slot | Not stated for adjusting; heights are measured with the engine not running |
How we chose
We looked for manufacturer support pages and extension pages that describe the adjustment on a specific mower type. We cited eleven pages, each opened on 2026-10-22 and each quoted from the saved text. Seven are Husqvarna US support pages, one is Worx’s North American support page, two are Ryobi Australian support pages, and one is University of Illinois Extension.
Husqvarna’s US pages cover petrol, battery and robot models, so most of the mechanism comes from one manufacturer. The Ryobi pages are Australian. They were included because the US Ryobi pages that search returned were product listings that do not describe the adjustment. The battery overload page is cited because it is the only battery-mower page we opened that names the stop-and-remove-battery step for height changes. Retail listings were not used for steps. PDF owner’s manuals from other brands could not be opened with the fetch tool, so they are not covered.
What we could not verify
- Which lever direction is correct for your mower. Husqvarna’s pages disagree, and the manual is the only reference.
- The adjustment steps for EGO and STIHL mowers, whose manuals are PDFs that the fetch tool cannot read, and for Greenworks, which the batch notes list as refusing requests.
- Whether all wheels or both levers need the same setting on a given push mower. The pages we opened do not say.
- How to measure the height on a push mower. Only the riding-mower page gives a measurement method, and it is measured with the engine off.
What the sources do not say
The sources we opened do not say how the adjuster is built inside the deck, and they do not say how to check that the deck is level on a push mower. They do not say whether the handle height changes the cut, and they do not give a procedure for a robot mower in a model that is not named on the page. They do not give a direction for every lever in the table.
FAQ
Do I need to remove the battery before I change the cutting height?
For a battery mower, the sources we opened give that step in two places. Husqvarna’s battery troubleshooting page says to stop the mower and remove the battery when the motor cuts out under load. The University of Illinois Extension page says to remove the battery for electric mowers whenever your hand goes near the blades.
On a robot mower, Husqvarna’s knob instructions start by pressing STOP and opening the hatch.
Which way does the lever move the cut?
It depends on the page. Husqvarna’s petrol page says rearward lowers the cut and forward raises it. Its battery overload page says backwards raises the cut and forwards lowers it. Look at the labels on your mower and check your manual before you move the lever.
Can I change the cutting height while the mower is running?
No. Husqvarna’s battery push-mower page says never to attempt to set the cutting height while the product is running. Its petrol “hard to push” page says the same about wheel height adjustments with the engine running.
Why does my mower cut out when the grass is cut low?
Husqvarna’s battery troubleshooting page lists low cutting height as one reason a motor works too hard, along with thick or wet grass. Its suggested fix is to stop the mower, remove the battery, and raise the cut with the lever.
Is handle height the same as cutting height?
No. Husqvarna’s battery push-mower page treats handle height as a separate adjustment that makes the mower easier to push. The pages we opened do not say that handle height changes the cut.
How do I change the height on a robot mower?
It depends on the model. On the Automower 308V, 312V and Aspire R6V, press STOP, open the hatch, and turn the knob. On models with electric adjustment, use the slider in the app or the display menu. Husqvarna says the symbol for cutting height can vary across models.
Bottom line
Do not change the height while the mower is running, and remove the battery first on an electric mower. Find the adjuster your model uses, and check the lever direction against your manual, because Husqvarna’s pages give opposite directions for their lever designs.
